The Friends of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to the wildlife conservation and education efforts at Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. Established in 1990, the Friends have worked collaboratively with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the community to fundraise, provide volunteer services, and support refuge programs. MissionOkefenokee Wildlife League is the official 501c3 non-profit that supports the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. The Okefenokee Wildlife League (OWL) was established in 1990 with the mission of supporting environmental education and interpretation at the refuge. In 2018, the OWL became publicly known as Friends of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. The vision for Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is to protect and enhance wildlife and its habitat, ensure integrity of the ecological system, and embrace the grandeur, mystery, and cultural heritage that leads to an enrichment of the human spirit. The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is a popular tourist destination and welcomes visitors from all 50 states and 30 countries each year! What We DoFriends of Okefenokee NWR plays a vital role in supporting the goals, programs, and mission of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. This support comes in the form of both financial contributions and dedicated volunteers from the Friends Group. In addition to their primary support activities, Friends of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge manages the Richard S. Bolt Visitor’s Center Nature Store. This management helps enhance the visitor experience and promotes awareness of the refuge's unique environment. The organization is also committed to fostering environmental education by supporting a variety of educational programs designed to help the public understand and appreciate the refuge's natural resources.
